
DAVID V. PICKER is a third generation motion picture executive and producer. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in 1953, he joined United Artists Corporation managing a series of businesses that, in addition to film, also included United Artists Records.
He was named President and Chief Operating Officer of United Artists Corporation in 1969 and Chief Executive Officer in 1970.
He was responsible for bringing to the company films such as TOM JONES, the JAMES BOND series, the WOODY ALLEN movies, The Beatles’ HARD DAY’S NIGHT and HELP, MIDNIGHT COWBOY, LAST TANGO IN PARIS and many other films. Among the many European filmmakers he brought to United Artists were Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, Francois Truffaut, Louis Malle and Sergio Leone.
As an exclusive Independent Producer for United Artists he delivered three films: LENNY starring Dustin Hoffman, directed by Bob Fosse (nominated for six major Academy Awards), SMILE directed by Michael Ritchie and JUGGERNAUT directed by Richard Lester.
As President of Paramount’s Motion Picture Division he acquired and/or supervised the development and production of SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, GREASE, CHEECH AND CHONG’S UP IN SMOKE, DAYS OF HEAVEN, HEAVEN CAN WAIT and ORDINARY PEOPLE.
He later discovered and joined forces with Steve Martin and produce THE JERK, DEAD MEN DON’T WEAR PLAID and THE MAN WITH TWO BRAINS, all directed by Carl Reiner.
As President of Feature Films at Lorimar he developed and/or supervised such films as S.O.B., BEING THERE, ESCAPE TO VICTORY and AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN.
As President and Chief Operating Officer of Columbia Pictures he put into production HOPE AND GLORY, SCHOOL DAZE, VICE VERSA, PUNCHLINE AND TRUE BELIEVER, among others. He also acquired the Oscar-winning THE LAST EMPEROR.
Among Mr. Picker’s other credits are THE ONE AND ONLY, BLOODLINE, BEAT STREET, STELLA, LEAP OF FAITH, THE SAINT OF FT. WASHINGTON, andArthur Miller’s THE CRUCIBLE, directed by Nicholas Hytner and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder, Paul Scofield and Joan Allen. He also produced the Academy Award-winning Short THE APPOINTMENTS OF DENNIS JENNINGS, starring Steven Wright and Rowan Atkinson, directed by Dean Parisot.
For television, he set up the project ARLI$$ for producer Michael Tollin and actor Robert Wuhl at HBO, and acted as Creative Consultant for the show’s entire run.
As President of Worldwide Production at Hallmark Entertainment, two of his Executive Produced projects were nominated for Best Mini-Series: THE TEMPTATIONS and P.T.BARNUM. Other productions include DAVID COPPERFIELD, IN THE BEGINNING, FIDEL and HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN. His most recent projects include FINAL ROUNDS based on the book by James Dodson, MOTHERLAND based on the book by Fern Schumer Chapman which he will also direct, and BARBEEQ which he co-wrote with Sharon Jetton. He has recently Executive Produced the documentary CHILDREN WILL LISTEN which was broadcast nationally on PBS.
Mr. Picker is a member of he Writer’s Guild of America East, The Producers Guild of America and is Chairman of the Producers Guild of America East.
His sister, Jean Picker Firstenberg, is Director Emeritus of the American Film Institute. His father, the late Eugene Picker, was with Loews Theatres for forty-four years, nine as President. His uncle, the late Arnold Picker, was a founding partner with Arthur Krim, in the new United Artists in 1951. One daughter, Caryn, was a Senior Vice President with Miramax Films and is now a marketing consulting. His other daughter, Pamela, is an interior designer in Burlington, Vermont. He is married to Sandra Jetton, a financial marketing consultant and Chair of the Board of Dress for Success Worldwide, a non-profit organization for underprivileged women.
He has served on many boards and committees, including The American Film Institute, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Board of Overseers of The Hopkins Center of the Performing Arts and The Hood Museum of Dartmouth College, among others.
