Carole Handler


Ms. Handler has tried numerous entertainment, trademark, copyright, and antitrust cases in state and federal courts in California, New York and Pennsylvania.

Her primary fields of practice are copyright in new media, antitrust, and the interface of antitrust and intellectual property. She has tried landmark cases involving the application of copyright principles to new technologies, as well as constitutional and antitrust cases involving motion picture licensing and distribution.

Her antitrust experience includes litigation in the fields of energy, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and other industries. She has done antitrust work for the National Basketball Association and counsels numerous antitrust clients. Ms. Handler also led a nine-week pro bono jury trial on behalf of noted Holocaust rescuer Irene Gut Opdyke.

Ms. Handler has been rated AV, the highest performance rating, in Martindale-Hubbell’s peer review rating system. She has been named one of the "Top Women Litigators in California" by Daily Journal Extra every year since 2002. In 2001, Ms. Handler was named one of the "Lawyers of the Year" by California Lawyer. In addition, she was selected for inclusion in the 2007 and 2008 editions of The Best Lawyers in America®, and in 2005, was featured in Super Lawyer magazine. In 2006, Ms. Handler was honored by AMIT as a Woman of Accomplishment. She is an adjunct professor of antitrust and intellectual property law at the University of Southern California and of copyright law at Rutgers University Law School. She has also taught at UCLA Law School. She speaks and writes widely on a variety of copyright and antitrust issues.
